A Lycopodium plant, growing along the Blue Ridge Parkway, in Virginia. Lycopodium is also known as club moss, although it’s not a true moss. These are plants, but not flowering plants. The entire plant was perhaps 8 inches/2 dm in height. The yellow structure bears spores.

As I was driving back home from NC, I took a detour onto part of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and was treated to the first real field of flowers I’ve ever seen. It was amazing. I pulled off onto the wide shoulder and just wandered down into all the flowers.

Junction of Blue Ridge Parkway and 220 North, near Roanoke, VA.
